Houston is one heck of an amazing city and so many of us are lucky to call it home.
Inspired as a follow-up to my previous post, 5 Date Ideas for Newlyweds, I wanted to get a little more geographically specific and what better place to start than with my hometown?
My quest today is to encourage couples to explore all that Houston has to offer — together. Just because you may or may not of called Houston home for a number of years, there’s always something new to discover with the never-ending growth of our city.
Please enjoy my list of Houston-specific date ideas!
Visit an art museum!
Houston is known for its rich art scene and cultural diversity. You have plenty of options when it comes to museums. For example, the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, which most everybody knows about. But what about the smaller, more intimate art spots?
The STATION Museum of Contemporary Art looks super fantastic. I haven’t yet had the chance to go but it’s absolutely on my list of day dates for me + my hubby this summer. Station is FREE and open to the public Wednesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. Their address is 1502 Alabama St. Houston, TX 77004.
Don’t forget The Menil Collection, which is another free local art museum located at 1533 Sul Ross St. Houston, TX 77006. Get some visual stimulation and thought-provoking inspiration with your sweetie by your side. Take turns explaining what you see to each other just like in the movies The Menil is also open Wednesday through Sunday. Their hours are 11 a.m. through 7 p.m.
Explore The Heights (or another new neighborhood)!
I’m always impressed by the growth and development of The Heights neighborhood. I spent years going to The Heights for one very specific thing – to go to shows at Fitzgerald’s. It’s amazing to see how much the area has blossomed with a number of cool bars, restaurants, and hang outs. Not to mention the gorgeous houses developing in the area.
Did you know The Heights hosts a monthly First Saturday Arts Market? It’s the perfect chance for you and your date to take a stroll, discover all kinds of new local artists and vendors, and have a blast doing it while enjoying an evening outside. Pets are welcomed to join in on the fun as long as they are on leashes. The next market is taking place this Saturday, July 6th at 548 W. 19th St. Houston, TX 77008 from 6-10 p.m. Make an evening of it and plan to grab a drink or dinner afterwards.
If you’re lucky enough to call The Heights home, don’t be afraid to venture out to a new neighborhood like Montrose or Midtown. Heck, why not venture out to Sugar Land, CityCentre, or The Woodlands one night and see what they’ve got to offer?
Visit a Farmer’s Market!
Farmer’s markets are a great way to support local business and get the FRESHEST ingredients for your kitchen. Not to mention, they are awfully fun to wander around. You never know what you might find. Check out this complete listing of Houston area farmers markets to find one near you.
Dave & Buster’s Game Night!
Although, this idea may not be as Houston specific as you’d expect, I had to include it. My husband and I enjoy going out to Dave & Buster’s every once in a while for a fun date night or group outing. Who doesn’t love fun + games? Not to mention they have pretty great drinks and food, too. You have your choice between glow in the dark bowling, billiards, and all kinds of fun game machines to play. My personal faves are the Deal or No Deal + Wheel of Fortune games. I recommend going later in the evening if you’re trying to avoid kids. Also, if you register for the D&B newsletter, they send all kinds of good promotions including deals on game play and great coupons!
Take a Swing at Top Golf!
This is another one that is on the top of my date to do list. I’ve heard SO MANY good things about this place. Top Golf is a “golf entertainment complex” great for all kinds of adventures but I most recommend it for double, triple, or quadruple dates. It’s easy to get competitive on this one! I’ve heard they have an impressive drink + food menu, too.
Again, another really fun, active date night option that can get a bit competitive between the two of you. Who doesn’t like a little healthy competition, anyways? I love the old school vibe of bowling and have always had a blast doing it. I understand many people either love bowling or hate it.
Go to a Show!
Go enjoy some live music together. Check out PollStar to see who’s coming to town.
Take a day trip to Galveston!
By being in Houston, we are less than an hour away from the island of Galveston (depending on time of day and traffic, of course). I, personally, think Galveston has a ton of fun to offer. You can check out Moody Gardens or Schlitterbahn. Or take a stroll on the beach. Dine on The Seawall. (I recommend Fish Tail’s for their DELICIOUS crab cake sandwich. YUM.) Visit the new Pleasure Pier. Go shopping on The Strand. Side note – if you go to The Strand, you MUST visit Bungalow — it’s my favorite shop. SO many cute things, I can never get out of there without wanting to buy just about everything the store has in stock.
Of course, I could probably continue on and on and on with this list. I haven’t even mentioned all the awesome sporting events we have in Houston. Or Discovery Green and it’s fantastic events. Or Hermann Park and the Zoo.
As you can see, there’s plenty of options for date ideas in Houston. You just have to make it a priority to make the time to DATE your spouse, significant other, boyfriend/girlfriend. These things are important to any relationship, no matter how long you’ve been together.
So go! Plan your next Houston date adventure.
Let me know about it in the comments section below. Is there anything else you’d add to this list of Houston date ideas? What’s your favorite local date spot? What’s your most memorable date ever (regardless of location)?
